Sick days

Sick day management

Person feeling sickYou'll need to take special care of yourself when you are sick. Being ill may cause stress, which can make it harder for your body to manage your blood glucose levels. You may need more medication when you are sick to prevent your blood glucose from going too high.

Check your blood glucose often...

Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, check your blood glucose and ketone levels every 3 to 4 hours when you are sick. Your healthcare provider will ask you about your levels during the time that you have been sick. Find out in advance from your healthcare provider whom to call when you are sick and call that person right away if you become ill.

Drink plenty of fluids...

Water is best, but tea (without milk, sugar or honey) or a diet soft drink is okay, too.

Try to eat something...

Try to eat your normal meals. Even if your stomach is upset, try to eat some toast, soup or a little juice.
